In pursuit of its commitment to advancing design scholarship, the Institute of Design at GLS University introduced the Doctoral Programme in Design to extend inquiry beyond professional practice into advanced academic research. The programme emphasizes original research, critical reflection, and theory-building within design and interdisciplinary domains. With a balanced focus on both practice-led and theory-led research, the doctoral journey at GLS University welcomes diverse research approaches and perspectives.
The programme seeks to address complex and emerging design questions that remain underexplored, contributing new knowledge and insights to the field. A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Design is awarded for advanced study that leads to the development of innovative methods, frameworks, solutions, and approaches across products, communication, services, experiences, education, and environments. Each doctoral thesis is expected to extend the existing body of knowledge through deep engagement with design thinking, processes, and practice, while demonstrating originality, rigor, and scholarly contribution.
Supported by 35 full-time faculty members, GLSID brings together educators, researchers, and industry practitioners who contribute to a rigorous, studio-based, and human-centered learning environment. This collective expertise, combined with a culture of experimentation and inquiry, has established GLSID as a recognised name in design education in Gujarat and beyond.
The institute offers B.Des (4 years), Global B.Des (Hons.) (4 years), Integrated M.Des (5 years), M.Des (2 years), and a PhD in Design. The curriculum emphasizes studio practice, research-led thinking, sustainability, and interdisciplinary learning across Fashion, Communication, Product, and Environment and Space Design domains. Through national and international exposure, graduates are prepared to contribute meaningfully to professional practice, academia, entrepreneurship, and society.
At the doctoral level, the PhD in Design focuses on practice-led and theory-driven research, encouraging scholars to generate original knowledge across design thinking, systems, communication, products, environments, education, and interdisciplinary fields. This growing research culture reflects GLSID’s commitment to advancing design scholarship alongside professional education.
